Sudanese president Omar Al-Bashir may cancel his planned trip to the Somali capital Mogadishu for the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) summit set to be held in Mogadishu next week over fears of arrest.
Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta may also send a representative although he was recently invited to Somalia by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud during his visit to Kenya.
A senior Sudanese official told a local media house on condition of anonymity that Mr. Bashir who is indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court (ICC) was not comfortable with the western backed Somali government’s ability to protect him in case the International Court comes for his neck. The official said that Mr. Bashir’s deputy would attend the summit in his place.
The summit scheduled for September 10 has since been pushed to September 13.
Several African Countries have repeatedly refused to ICC’s request to arrest the long-serving Sudanese leader notable among them being a visit to Nairobi, Kampala, Lagos and Johannesburg.
Reached for comment, spokesman of the Somali Government did not respond to our inquiries over the same.
